The Red Sea:  Tectonic Analysis of a Young Ocean Basin

--The margins of the Red Sea are steep fault scarps:
       *less than 3 km high
       *scarp mountains extend for kilometers on either side of the coast
       *the eastern coast has a higher elevation than the western coast

--A main trough extends northward from ~15.5°N to the tip of the Sinai Peninsula

--An axial trough extends through the main one:
       *Five to 30 km wide
       *bounded by parallel faults to about 25°N
       *north of 25°N, axial trough is merely a broad, U-shaped depression

--The sea floor may be divided into two parts:
       *shallow
       *abyssal depth
