Faults of the Aegean and Anatolian Regions |
The region has significant structural features that represent considerable geologic hazards. The North Anatolian Fault Zone (NAFZ) is one of the most active faults in the world (see Brian Black's BYU tectonics web page for more information about the NAFZ). The Hellenic and Cyprus subduction zones, also active, are capable of creating large earthquakes and tsunamis on the Mediterranean Sea. Mapped faults have be adapted from Martinod 2000, Michel 1995, and Papazachos 1999. |
