Active Tectonic - Luzon Arc

Philippines and Taiwan

This is a digital elevation map (DEM) of the Philippines and Taiwan.  It shows the relative depths of the ocean basin and the relative heights of the land elevations.  The mountain ranges on both sides of the archipelago are due to the subduction of the oceanic plates.  This has caused thrust sheets to build up in the acretionary wedge and then volcanism has occurred in this area to further build up the mountain ranges.  The major valley that runs the length of the island is a due to the strike-slip fault and most likely some extension of the back arc basin.  The deep blue areas in the ocean basin is the oceanic crust that has been forming at mid-ocean ridges. The lighter blue is thinned continental crust that has been stretched due to the former rifting of Eurasia.  The light aquamarine color is the continental shelf of Eurasia.
