Major Faults and Plate Boundaries of New Zealand

New Zealand is the result of ocean-ocean convergence along two subduction zones (the Macquerie or Puyseger to the south and the Tonga-Kermadec or Hikurangi to the north).  The North Island also experiences back-arc extension (7mm/y) in the Taupo Volcanic Zone.  The large strike-slip fault in the South Island is the Alpine Fault (uplift < 10mm/y, displacement 30-40 mm/y). This video is a demonstration of how New Zealand will deform in the next few million years.
