Sedimentary Rocks

Petrography
This site contains photomicrographs and descriptions of many sedimentary rocks. Maintained Humboldt State University.

Bedform Sedimentology Site
This site has several computer generated animations showing the development of various kinds of sedimentary structures, including cross bedding and surface ripples. Maintained by the U.S. Geological Survey.

Coral Reef Research Center
This site is dedicated to the notion that science may enable the sustainable use of Australia’s Great Barrier reef. Animations, movie clips, and images illustrate the world of this fascinating reef. Maintained by James Cook University.

Web Resources for Sedimentary Geologists
This site contains a growing list of web sites of interest for sedimentary geologists. Maintained by the University of Oregon.

Clastic Depositional Environments
Here you will find a reconstruction of the Cretaceous Gates Formation--a wave dominated shoreline in northeastern British Columbia. Clicking on a three dimensional block diagram of the ancient environments reveals images of rocks typical of the environment. As you will see, rocks of very similar characteristics may occur in more than one environment. Interpretation of depositional environment relies on looking at each rock in its stratigraphic context. Maintained by University of British Columbia.

Jurassic Reef Park
Virtual fieldtrip of a Jurassic reef in Germany and modern environments where similar rocks are forming today. Maintained by the University of Stuttgart.
