"I absolutely loved how many different scientific concepts were taught.
The visual aids were WONDERFUL!! Thanks!" --Miss Piñon

LET YOUR TA KNOW IF YOU NEED ELECTRICITY
or WATER FOR YOUR PRESENTATION

  • The main objective of your presentation is to teach an earth science principle that satisfies a state standard for the particular grade level. It should be presented clearly enough that the children will be able to understand the concept and should be fun enough to hold their attention. Teach or review any concepts that support or build up to your main point.
  • Any abstract science concepts that you teach must be tied back into reality. For instance, you may choose to show the concept of sedimentary rocks and explain the layering by making a baloney sandwich with layers of bread, cheese, mayo, mustard, baloney, etc. Make this abstract concept a reality for the students by showing them a picture of a rock or bring one to let them see in person.
  • Use the set of standards by grade level for your section that you were given. Some concepts may not have been covered in class specifically, but there are numerous resources available for any additional information that you may require.

  • Within your lab section, form groups of three.
  • Each lab section will be assigned a grade level and a set of science standards.
  • Each group should choose one or more of the standards — your presentation should teach the concept(s) chosen. Think about your topic(s) and come up with some ideas for some presentations. Bring those ideas with you on your lab on Oct 11th or 12th (depending on which lab day you normally attend). On that day, you will work within your section so that you have a coherent block of information for the Joaquin students.
  • If two groups end up wanting to work on the same standard, the TA will decide (based upon which team has the better activity planned) which team will do the standard and which team will have to keep trying on another standard. Not every standard must be covered — but there should be no duplicates.

  • Presentations should be less than 5 minutes. If your team has a terrific idea that will last longer than 5 min, work with another team to share the time between you.

  • A lesson plan must be turned into your TA as part of this project.
  • This is a group project and ALL members of the group are expected to participate. Team members will assess each other and themselves as part of your grade for this project. Get involved!
  • Additional assessment will be done by the teachers at Joaquin as part of your grade for this project.
  • Click HERE to see the rubrics.

  • Extra credit can be earned by a very fun, understandable, polished presentation that is “excellent.”

  • 1st and 2nd grades: Nov 13th 9-10 am
  • 3rd grade: Nov 13th 10-11 am
  • 4th grade: Nov 14th 9-11 am
  • 6th and 5th grade: Nov 15th 9-11 am
  • Each group will have a long table and the wall behind it. If your group has any special space or electrical needs please let your TA know.

Meet at the north parking lot at Farrer Elementary (100 N 600 E, Provo)

  • A List of words are provided with some of the standards: these words are terms that children in that particular grade level should be learning that year. Try to include them in your demonstration and you might use the words from previous years also as resources.
  • To see the full set of standards, go to http://www.uen.org/k12educator/
  • Examples and helps are on the list on the right of this screen.
  • Ask your TA lots of questions and as always, contact Dr. Bickmore if you need help!
